In most martial arts, practitioners learn a wide variety of techniques. And yet, even black belts often fail in real-life situations, reacting too late or completely wrong. Within seconds, they can find themselves in a life-threatening situation.

This coming Thursday, we will start the SAJJ course at the IKEDA DOJO at Hardturmstrasse 100 in Zurich. In August, we want to focus on this very topic in SAJJ training. What happens when we focus on our opponent in training (or in a real situation) and suddenly something happens that distracts our attention? Within seconds, we must adapt to the new situation.

As always, I have a few Vacirca Brothers “Gracie Games” up my sleeve so that we can put our Jiu-Jitsu technique through its paces. As always, our courses are open to all members of all levels and belt colors. Please always bring a clean Gi and a clean rash guard with you.

See you soon on the Tatame!

Keep it real …

“INVICTUS” is a short poem by English poet William Ernest Henley. Henley wrote it in 1875, and in 1888 he published it in his first volume of poems, Book of Verses, in the section titled “Life and Death (Echoes)”.

INVICTUS (Poem)

Out of the night that covers me
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance,
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate
I am the captain of my soul.
